What good is learning technology?

if i was to pick up a hobby, say in something like technology and advancements in it since the first game system, the first computer, the first phone, the first i pod, the first vcr to the first tv, radios even. what if i made a hobby of learning about technology in this sense? what good would it do me, what kind of possible careers could i find if i became very skilled and adept at knowing these things? what good is it?
